The Frari church and the Scuola of St Roch

The tour starts at the Frari campo: we will look for the signs of the foreign communities that lived here in the past and view the entrance of one of the largest state archives in Italy, once the Franciscan monastery, before Napoleon secularized it.

The Frari church is a breathtaking, imposing gothic church where it becomes easy to retrace the development of the history of Venice as well as that of the Venetian art (and not only Venetian) from the 13th to the 19th century – masterpieces by Donatello, Giovanni Bellini and Titian rival with the wood carvers and engravers that prepared the choir stalls for the monks.

Just around the corner, then, we will move into San Rocco square, where we can visit the site of the very well-known San Rocco Guild, internally decorated with Tintoretto’s masterpieces in the late Renaissance and the striking walnut wooden statues by Pianta.
