At the turn of the 20th century, even Venice experienced its industrial revolution.

It was especially in the abandoned areas on the island of Giudecca where, apart from exceptional cases such as the Stucky industrial mill, these changes occurred in a hidden and almost camouflaged way.

Once on the island monasteries and convents widely spread close to noble mansions. Then the secularisation of church properties in 1807 hit the island in a much stronger way than other islands and where once spaces for religious meditation had been, there opened military hospitals or hospitals for infectious diseases, and then the Stucky industrial mill, the Dreher brewery, the Fortuny factory, the Hérion fabrics, Junghans watches...

Today, most of these industrial places have closed and while walking across the island, we’ll run into the wonderful church by Palladio of The Redeemer, hidden gardens, frescoed and stuccoed chapels, silent cloisters and breathtaking views and will try to understand ways for the contemporary language in Venice.
